What are Castor Bean Oil Bristles?Updated 11 hours ago
We've recently redesigned and reimagined our Eco Bamboo Toothbrush to make it even better, and we'd love to share a little more about the materials we use and the reasons behind our choices.
Plant-Based Bristles
Our updated Eco Toothbrush features plant-based bristles made from castor bean oil. We chose this material because it offers a lower carbon footprint compared to conventional petroleum-based bristles and is not produced using crude oil.
Castor bean plants are also able to grow in poor soil conditions that are unsuitable for food crops, meaning they do not compete with land needed for food production.
Are the Bristles Really Plant-Based?
Yes! The bristles are derived entirely from castor bean plants. While there is still a manufacturing process required to transform the castor bean oil into durable toothbrush bristles, they are made from one of the most environmentally conscious materials currently available for oral care products.
Why Not Use Fully Compostable Bristles?
We would love nothing more than to offer a toothbrush that is 100% home compostable. However, after extensive research, we've found that the only currently available option for fully compostable bristles would be animal hair, which does not align with our product values and quality standards.
As technology and materials continue to evolve, we'll keep researching and exploring new innovations that support our mission of creating the most environmentally responsible products possible.
Our Current Best Solution
For now, we've chosen what we believe is the best balance between sustainability, performance, and practicality:
- Compostable bamboo handle
- Plant-based bristles made from castor bean oil
- Lower reliance on fossil-fuel-derived materials
- Reduced environmental footprint compared to conventional toothbrushes
We're committed to continuous improvement and will keep striving for even more sustainable solutions in the future.
