What is a kitchen compost bin?
A kitchen compost bin, or kitchen caddy, holds food waste such as fruit and vegetable ends and skins. Compost bins used to live outside because of the smell; ours are designed to sit in your kitchen.
Our Kitchen Compost Bin has a charcoal filter built into the lid that keeps the smell in the bin, not your kitchen. It comes in a range of colours, so it can sit on your bench.
What can I put in it?
Food waste, mostly fruit and vegetable scraps. Eggshells add calcium to soil, and coffee grounds and loose tea leaves help too. As a rule of thumb, anything made from nature can go back to nature: food scraps, cardboard and plant-based cleaning cloths are all fine. Leave out anything that isn't plant-based or compostable.
What are biodegradable bin liners, and do I need one?
Our biodegradable bin liners break down in your compost, so emptying the caddy into your outdoor bin is less messy. They meet Australian Standard AS4736, so they'll biodegrade anywhere with oxygen and microorganisms, on land or in water.
How do I care for the charcoal filter?
- Material: nylon, chosen for durability and easy washing.
- Washing: swish the filter gently in warm soapy water, pat it dry, then leave it flat in a sunny spot to air dry before refitting. Don't squeeze, wring, twist or hang it, as this can change its shape.
- How often: wash it each time you empty the bin. It's designed to be washed and reused.
- Replacements: if it's lost or worn out, buy replacement filters separately. Choose the one that matches your bin.
